Moving House

So, I have mentioned that I had to move. I am giving up a house, that while it had issues, i loved living in.

I have spent  a while trying to find somewhere new, and I will be signing the lease and getting keys over the next few hours, moving into the new place tonight and tomorrow.

The new place had no chance of living up to that, and to be honest it isn’t even close. However, it has the advantage that i will now be sharing with only one person, and secure underground parking for my car.

However it is large enough for my weekly game, large enough to have a small group of friends over, about ten – fifteen. On the plus side it is about ten minutes stroll to work, downhill in the morning. Also there is no easy bus to work. The only bus that passes by would take me further from work.

Once i get back from Texas and settled in I will post some more thoughts on the place.

What i am doing at Lone star Con 3

So, I have had a busy month. I have found a new place to live, sign contracts tomorrow, and then get keys and begin moving in.

Then on Wednesday i head to San Antonio for the 2013 Worldcon. I am pretty excited, though the travel is going to stretch me to my limits. I have a very long Layover!

I have panels at this years Worldcon, three of them.

What Would Happen If We Could Easily Publish Fanfic

Friday 12:00 – 13:00   Politics and legalities of fanfic, now and in the future. How does it affect what we write? Does the new e-publishing fanfic imprints change the game and how?

New SF Communities in New Milieus

Saturday 12:00 – 13:00   SF/F is become more accepted and more integrated into more places every day. How has this come about? How can we nurture these communities? What can we learn from them?

Introduction to Eurocons

Sunday 14:00 – 15:00   What is a Eurocon? With next year’s Eurocon following shortly after the Worldcon, we take a brief look at what they are.

This is a pretty good schedule, with some topic i am looking forward to getting into. Add in the various other panels I want to get to, and the Shamrokon Table that i will be managing. It shall be a busy time, filled with seeing friends and catching up with them.

Anyway, hope to see you some of you soon.

Liberty Hall Skyline

Every year, there is a cultural event in Dublin called Open House. The main idea of this is to open up buildings that are normally closed to the public. The buildings usually have a historical or Architectural significances.

I First came across this in i think 2010, and wasn’t able to make the weekend. In 2011 I got the open times wrong for Liberty Hall, and so i finally got up on top of the tallest building in Dublin in October 2012.

Once i got out onto the roof I took lots and lots of photos, and in the end managed to put together a vaguely consistent set of pictures that covered most of the skyline, and where reasonably steady.

This is probably my favorite of the lot.

I hope to get back up this year, but may pick a different building to go and see.

An update

So part of the reason i started this blog was to talk about conventions that i went to, however i was so busy having fun at Eastercon and Eurocon i never updated, and then i got busy in work.

The biggest piece of news around here is that I have I have been elected to the board of the ESFS as the Secretary. Which is going to be fun. We are currently working on updating the website, and laying a few other foundation stones to hopefully modernise and streamline the organization.

We do hope that we can then keep up with the original purpose of the ESFS, to promote Science fiction in Europe, and European Science fiction to the World.

Exciting times eh!

I have plans to spend a lot of money this year.

I have plans for three international Conventions, a friends wedding, and as many local conventions i can get to.

This is not cheap. Last year i tried three international conventions, and was effectively insolvent by November. It took me until Late januray to sort out my solvency, by in the traditonal way of relevarging my debts, to pay them back over a longer period at a lower interest rate!

However this requires me to be much more careful and plan how i intend to spend my money. To that end i have set up arrangements to spread cost of bills, car insurance, car tax and a few other things out over the rest of the year. This means a set amount out of each paycheck will go to pay these thigns. hence allowing me to be sure that no bills are not covered in the amount i have left in my current account.

This is all very boring really, but its stuff like this that will mean that i can probably afford to travel and to save!

Housing Worries

I am currently renting. I love the house I am in, and I am sure that I will post some pictures of the Awesome Kitchen, and the dining room, which is perfect for gaming.

However one of the problems with the house is that the landlord has it up for sale. As much as I would love to purchase the house, it is so far out of my price range that a 50% pay raise would probably still have it out of range.

Now in the year and a month since I moved in, I moved in on the 31st of December 2o11, no one has actually viewed the house, until this week. Now this is not a sign that anything is going to happen, As the House is still about €50,000 overpriced for the area, and the small bits of maintenance that it needs.

However it has just brought back to mind the issue exists. While we have a lease that means we will get three months to move out once he tells us that he is selling the house, the chances of finding a house this nice again is so low.

The house is reasonably well located. I can walk to work in about 30 minutes, while it is located beside Phibsborough Village, and all of its amenities. There is also, as I previously mentioned, the huge Kitchen, the sitting room and dining room combo, the Indoor barbecue, the Large Bathroom.

While there are some downsides, like having to share with three other people, these are well offset by what we get and how much it is costing us.

So while being forced to move would not be the end of the world, it would not be happy making.
